years ago when the long hair became a fad for young people the cowboy community didnt take to it well. there was a lot of young people who ventured into cowboy domain who left at a lope with a lot of their hair trimmed with pocket knives! i knopw of several instances where this happened first hand. but i can honestly say i never helped to trim one up. i know of one instance that resulted in a shooting. so you see it was a serious thing on both sides!
at prescott one year between the slack and the afternoon performance a bunch of us were in a waterhole on whiskey row. there was a bunch of rodeo contestants of the old order there who were ropers and bull doggers. we were all relaxing when a skinney hippy stuck his head in the door stuck his tounge out and said cowboys sucked! that was enough, 3 of those bulldogger types, 230 pound or more stood up and started out the door in pursuit if this mouthy clown. when he realized the trouble he was in he left like the hounds of hell were chasing him. and they just as well have been! one of these big guys was a shirt tail kin of mine who was laughing as he caught this mouthy hippy. the other two then grabbed him and held him down while his " mane " was roached. remember this is taking place on the side walk of whiskey row in down town prescott. when those big fellers turned that hippie up he had some bld spots on his head , a couple of scrap marks that was weeping blood. also he seemed to have lost his pants! during all this 2 city cops drove by and never said a word! but when through we all decided to repair to the rodeo grounds just in case.
