this is more of a childhood memory, but i need to tell it. when i was little you could buy maple syrup in gallon glass jugs. they were flat, tall and had a screw cap on top. a wire bail was attached at the corner for easier carring. my grand father , who we all called paw paw would take one of those jugs , clean it out real good , wrap it in burlap 3 or 4 thickneses, sew it on with sacking string and we had a water jug that when soacked early in the morning would keep drinking water cool all day in the middle of the summer. of course you had to be careful where you laid it because being glass it was somewhat fragile. many is the time i remember a long cool drink out of one of those jugs after a day of working in the feilds.
paw paw carried one in each of his cars and trucks. his favorite car was a 51 studebaker that he roared up and down the dirt roads around his farm south of chandler. it was a coupe and in the back floorboard there rested that water jug. it was there the day paw paw hit a buzzard at 60 mph. we used the water to clean the windsheild enough to get home. i still remember the smell. i havent seen one of those jugs in years.
