while at the 76 ranch a local high school girl who raises and showed brangas cows approached us to buy her little herd of cows. she was going to college and was getting out of the show cattle deal. now this girl had won at every major cattle show in the southwest and the quality of these cows was excellent. they had been run on a half section of abandoned farm that had gone back to desert, so they knew how to make a living on the desert. the boss stepped up and bought this little bunch of cows and one young brangus bull. they were gentle and would raise some really good replacement heifers.
we took delivery on these cows and branded them then located them on a soft peice of ground with good gramma grass and tank water. sure enough they all calved and raised real big growthy calves. they were the last bunch of cows to get gathered to brand the calves. they lived down in the corner of the pasture off by themselves. they didnt associate with the common ole commercial brangus cows we had. i knew these were gentle so i sent the mrs. to bring them in. it was a hour ride there and maybe a hour and a half back driving . well lunch rolled around and the mrs. wasnt back. i was starting to get nervous when i saw her and her little white horse comming down the road with out any cattle. when she got to the hold up i could see she was boiling mad!! " those damn lick and smooch cows!" she yelled "you cant drive them any where !"
after lunch we all went down to the pasture corner where these cows lived. sure enough when you tried to drive them they just walked off in a dozen different directions!! all the hollering and whippen didnt make a dent in them. come to find out the little gal who raised them had them all halter broke. all you had to do was throw a rope on one and lead off toward home and the rest would follow!! we only did that once , but when out prowling we would throw them to gether and maybe drive them a little ways. by the next works you could drive them like normal cows. and you didnt have to lick and smooch them to do it!!
