each day denton was able to get up and walk a little bit more. he was gaining strength and feeling better. braxton had gone to paradise to check on his wife and his cattle there. denton knew braxton didnt really want to be involved but he also knew when a band of outlaws such as the ones comming needed to be eliminated for the good of the community. denton had brad saddle his horse the last couple of days. he would walk to the stable and ride around town and maybe out into the surrounding country looking for the band of marauders. while he rode he invisioned a future where he had a few cattle and maybe a peaceful life. more and more this occupyed his mind. jody at the hotel spent a lot of time with him, even tho he no longer needed the daily care. he enjoyed her company. the fact that she was almost fifteen years younger than he was made no difference to her and now to denton.- this day as denton rode back into town he saw will sloans saddled horse at the stable. he rode up next to the horse then slowley dismounted. " ime glad your back denton come in here out of the sun" will called from inside the barn. when inside the barn denton found will sitting on a wooden nail keg. bottle of beer setting on the floor between his feet. " the band of outlaws were in paradise just two days ago. we cant figure if they are going to follow the border or come up this way. but since they havent appeared here i will assume they are holed up or are traveling east along the border.i think we need to go toward the border aand see if we cross their trail. you up to it?" sloan proposed. " gimmie a half hour ill be ready."denton turned and walked back to the hotel. there he found jody and explained where he was going. he asked that she would make sure his room was held for him. she stood there stiff looking up into his eyes. then she leaned in and on tip roes she kissed him lightly. "you be sure you come back . and all in one peice." she whispered. denton went to his room and got his rifle and saddle holster . as he passed her in the hall he stopped and stepped back then he leaned down and kissed her." i like it so much the first time i figured i better make sure it was real! " he smiled and headed back to the stable. jody watched him from the window as he and sloan mounted then rode away.
