the south Carolina flash never seemed to stay stay in one spot to long. he was single had no bills, a good pickup with a six pack camper , two horses and a prca card. he was a tougher n nails bull dogger. when money ran short he would show up at a feed yard get a job and stay 6 months or so till he felt the itch to move. everyone like him and he had no touble getting a job because he was a good hand.
chuck was a little older than most of us. he was stabile, and didn't roam around much . his kids were grown, just him and his wife. he didn't move as fast as some, was a bit fastidious about things but was a good feedyard cowboy. he was likable and good natured. at one feedyard I worked at chuck and the flash were teamed up and worked the calf ally. both were a little slow moving and that was good in the calf ally. if you went slow you would see all the calves and not miss a possible sick one.
in the summer time after lunch it was to hot to stir the cattle working them or prowling around. so every day a different team would stay in the afternoon and the rest of us went home. the team that stayed would hang out at the saddle house. every hour or so ride around the feed allies and put up any strays that had crawled out. during the time at the saddle house you washed your saddle blankets, played cards or in chucks case took a little nap on a old couch that some long forgotten hand had left there. now the flash was easy going and to some one who didn't know him would look like a half witted hillbilly. but the opposite was true. behind those baby blues lay a practical joker of no bounds, a devious mind operated min his cranium! one day while chuck was snoozing on the couch , his hat had fell off and it exposed chucks bald knob! the flash seizing the opertunity got a bottle of den blu vet lotion and carefully painted chucks bald spot blue!! when the lotion had dried the flash put chucks hat back on. he then did the evening chores while chuck continued to sleep. when done he woke chuck telling him it was time to go home. chuck unsaddled , put away his horse and drove off toward home with the flash chuckling like a cartoon character. next day the hockey hit the fan, but the flash had already drawn his wages and was off to another rodeo!! den blu don't wash off, it wears off, so every morning for two months chuck scrubbed his head with soap and water cursing the flash!!
