when i worked at tovereas at the maricopa yard my partner in crime was the old timer. a man who had rodeoed, trained race horses and raised a lot of hell. on one week end when we both were off he approached me to go to the fourth of july rodeo at prescott. he had heard some of his old cronnies would be there in cluding the actor ben johnson. i had a new ford pickup and felt this would be a great idea. i had been there before and knew there was a great street dance on whiskey row and the rodeo was always good. sooo we went.
we got into prescott on friday afternoon and naturaly headed for whiskey row first thing. when we found a place to park it became evident that there was a BIG crowd outside the palace bar. the old timer pushed his way through and pointed to the bar at a broad back. " theres ben he told me". he then hollered hey ben, you old s.o. b. from some where above us came a clearly agitated voice, cut, cut , cut! get that clown outa here! ben johnson came over, shook the old timers hand and explained they were shooting a movie scene and he would see us later. the unseen voice was directer sam peckinpagh and the movie they were doin was JR. BONNER. well we were escorted outside by security and advised the bar would be open later. man was the old timer mad! who they think they are he hollered? later that night we shared a booth with mr. johnson and steve mcqueen for just a few minutes. good people to put up with us when so many people was clamering to get close to them. mr. peckenpaugh wasnt quite so generouse but did shake hands and said there was no hard feelings. a great time that weekend, what i can remember of it!
