THE WILL 2
tobey stpped his truck at the twin gates to the yard that had been his uncles home. he got out and fumbled with the keys until he found the right one and unlocked the gates and pushed them open. inside the yard on one side stood tall open air barns stacked with baled hay of all kinds and sizes. on the other side stood a comfortable adobe home . it had been recently plastered. he went over to the house and finding the keys unlocked the door and slowley went in. the house was well kept. cowboy memorabilia was hung on the walls. a stocked liquor cabinet stood to one side. the house was spotless,
out side a horn blowed. he kept walking through the house but the horn blowed again. he looked out a window and saw a chevey truck parked and back up to the hay barn.
"now what the hell?" he turned and went out side. a man was throwing bales into his truck.
" what you doing there?"tobey called as he walked up.
" loading my hay like i always do! damn this place being closed for a week put us in a bind" the man jumped to the ground and pulled a wad of cash from his pocket" same as before?" he asked as he counted out bills.
" whats going on here? unless you dont know uncle blake is dead, ime takeing over. i dont understand what this is all about" tobey asked.
" ime sorry, i figured you knew. this is the only place around for miles where we can buy a bale of hay. the feed store is so expensive we cant go there. every one comes here so the feed store dont even keep hay.
you better get ready because when word gets out you will be flooded with customers. blake sold as much as two truck loads a week."the man explained as he got in the truck" see ya next week". he started his truck and roared out the gate just as another pick up pulled in. without a word it also backed in the spot where the first truck was. tobey stood transfixed. a shapley middle aged woman hoped out" i need five please."
as in a dream tobey went to the stack and put five bales in the womans truck. when he got down she handed him a crumpled up hand full of cash. " thanks, see you in a few days"she got in her truck and left tobey standing there his hands full of cash.
before dark tobey had sold almost a thousand dollers worth of three wire bales of alfalfa hay.he decided the only was to get a break was to shut the gates. just as he swung them shut a little economy truck pulled up and stopped. a young mexican boy got out.
"do i still have a job?" he asked.
tobey stopped and looked all around" are you asking me?" he blurted.
" i worked for blake loading hay and feeding the cattle when he had some here are you the new owner?" the boy asked
"yes, who are you? no one told me about this deal. i dont know how long this will last, but come back in the morning at day light , we will talk" tobey told him.
the boy backed his truck out and drove away.tobey locked the gates. in the house he found enough to make a meal then availed himself of the liquor cabinet, he settled down to think on this deal he never had more than a couple hundred dollers in his life. he had dumped the days take on the coffee table and was smoothing it out. when first told of his inheriding this deal he thought about selling everything and going back north. but this seemed to good to be true. he wanted to go look at the grazeing permit but couldnt leave the hay barn . tomorrow he would see what the kid at the gate had to say.
