DELBERT BRIGGS 28
JACKSON WAS GETTING DESPERATE. HE FOUND OUT THROUGH THE GOSSIP MILL THAT DELBERT WAS SENDING CATTLE TO THE AUCTION BARN. HE needed that check. he stood looking out his office window at the traffic passing the bank where he was standing. back at his desk he picked up the file lying there with delberts nsme stenciled on it. opening it he saw he had been over looking a paragraph. it stated the bank could call in the note on the ranch at any time with a ten day notice. if the bank felt their position in danger. there was no initials at the place for them. he added his initials and useing a note pad practiced with delberts initials until he felt confident as to his forgery. this maybe just the thing. he post dated the document and sealed it into a envelope. he would hand deliver it.
at the sale barn randy was counting the cattle comming off the double deck cattle co. just as he finished he saw jackson walking into the office of the sale barn. presently a dark haired young woman in a pair of snug wranglers and a ruffle front blouse came walking to him where he stood leaning against the fence.
" i figgured you ought to see this asap." she handed him a sheet of paper.
randy had to read through it twice to get a full understanding of what he read" where is the man who brought this?" he asked the girl.
" he left, he said he would be back to get the check for the cattle when they sold."the young girl said.
" dont turn anything over to him until i get back mis print the check do something. ill be back as soon as i can." randy took the paper and hustled over to his pickup. when he roared out of the yard parking lot the girl stood in wide eyed amazement.
late that aternoon the auction was winding down. delberts cows were almost all sold. delbert sat in a leather covered chair over against the wall. in through the front door stode jackson. he had a air of self confidence as he walked past delbert to the sellers window." i came for the check on the cattle sold that wre discribed on that form i left here."he demanded.
the young girl looked up and sweetly said" they havent all sold yet." she batted her long lashes at him.
" well, how long do i have to wait?" jackson demanded.
" the girl looked up at light on the wall with numbers flickering on it. it showed the amount of cattle sold that hour." oh maybe a couple of hours. ill need all the paper work and be able to clear it before i write a check" she smiled and batted her long lashes at him.
jackson shuffled his feet and looked around. then turned and walked over to the little cafe and took a seat at a table.
delbert watched it all with a big grin on his face.
