DENTON CROUCH 15

as denton rode down pinery canyon toward the little town of dos cabezas his mind was awash with many thoughts. the more he thought on the subject the more he realised he no longer want to be involved in law enforcment. the thought of the chamber maid back in willcox , jody kept crowding into his brain. but how whould he support her? how would he raise a family? as all this was raceing through his mind he realised his horse had slowed to a crawl.. he would never make dragoon before dark if he didnt rattle a spur in his stirrup. when he left pinery canyon and crossed into the sulphur springs valley he suddenly felt a wave of contentment come over him this was a good place to be.as he rode along on the trail to dos cabezas on his right the rolling foot hills of the dos cabezas mountains were showing a few head of cattle grazeing there. on his left the sulphur springs valley spead out and ran open clear to and past the mexican border. he had never been indebted to any one but now knew he would need to borrow to buy up a home place, to buy a few cattle to get started. the more he thought on this the more he became convinced he needed to move on this idea. before reaching dos cabezas he could see a lonly ranch house to his left. a windmill stood next to the house and turned slowly sending a stream of water trickling into a pond just beyond the house. the house was dark. he turned his horse down the trail to the yard. when he arrived it dawned on him this ranch house was abandoned. the door stood open and flys buzzed around the opening. stepping down from his horse he walked up to the door and peered inside. it was a one room house. a fire place stood on one corner. no furniture remained. back out side he found a legal notice stateing the property belonged to the ARIZONA BANK in willcox. standing there in the early evening dusk denton thought on what he had found. folding the legal notice he stuck it into a saddle pocket and remounted. when he rode into dos cabezas he rode right down the middle of the street and on west to willcox. he still had plenty of horse under him and figgured he would make willcox around midnite. he had a plan and he wanted to move on it as soon as possible.
