the farmer

when the farmer had gone to the sheep camp  he found Santiago gone. the sheep had been out of water for a few days. the field where they grazed was eaten down to the roots. they needed to be moved.  after watering them he opened a few bales of hay all the while cursing and ranting and raving. back in town he stormed into the cozy spot. one of his men who hung out there went down to the booth where the farmer sat with the cold beer the bar tender delivered.
" Santiago is in Tucson at the fed lock up. they nabbed him after he shot rigsby. he was getting ready to  hit bender when they got him. "  the man said
the farmer was listening while he stared at the bubbles in his beer. a cold fear griped his insides. looking up at the man he glared at him " then if you knew that why didn't you take care of the sheep?"
" ill do it now." the man backed away in fear

" I already did, but get out there and watch the place till I find some one else." the farmer was seething.
he didn't think that Santiago would talk. and besides he didn't even know the farmers real name. the old truck  he drove had no traceable links to him so he shouldn't be afraid, but he was still. a fear that he would be exposed lingered. the fear that his plans would fall apart, inwardly he shivered.  he felt a compulsion to run, leave the country with what he had. he sipped the beer while he fought down the urge to cry out in fear and anger. another sip of the cold drink, and the fear began to subside and anger moved back into control.  he decided to let the dust settle, see what happened. only a hand full of people knew about his activities with the border. most people knew him by his given name.  how could they trace the smuggling and the murder to him? he smilled a smug smile. maybe getting rid of the little killer was a good thing. maybe keeping  quiet would through the law into a search of another area. he relaxed and settled back into his seat. waving to the bar tended for another beer he smiled to himself and thought this will all work out.
