PICK UP MEN

the term pick up men is applied to a couple of three groups of people. they could cross over into each groups or just be used in a singular group of folks. to most urbanites a pick up man is a fellow who hangs out in bars looking to pick up a lonely woman to take home for the night.  these guys are users, selfish and look out for no ones well being but their own.  to red necks the term pick up men refers to almost all male members of the sect. for almost all men of the red neck creed drive pick up trucks.  what better to haul moonshine, poached deer or girls in daisey dukes and halter tops!  and then there are the pick up men of rodeo. life savers, shills for the rodeo clown and announcer. they clean up the arena of reluctant broncs and bulls who have the o.j. syndrome, they don't wanna go to the pen. pick up men are often overlooked while the average fan oooos and awwwwws over the contestants in the rough stock events. but the fact is with out the pick up men those contestants would be risking life and limb more than usual. am I partial to them?you bet as ime the daddy to one of the best in Arizona. I have seen him along with others, save hung up bareback riders lives by roping a bronc they are hung to, prying the gloved hand out of the riggen. years ago wayne vold and his brother doug were able to save the great larry mahans life by leaving the pick up horse, crawling out onto the back of the bareback bronc and release larry s hand. it saved larry s life even tho he had numerous broken bones.  a good pick up man will also allow a bronc to put on the best show he can allowing the rider the best shot at a winning ride. many a pick up man will run to a bronc to early thus causing the bronc to slow up or quit bucking altogether. the average spectater doesn't realize this. a alert pick up man will keep loose livestock in a corner or roped when a injured cowboy is down in the arena. and yes this pick up man will cross over to the other two classes. by neseccity they drive pick up trucks , hauling those top mounts around from rodeo to rodeo.nd yes some of them are pick up men as far as the fairer sex is concerned.  so when you watch a rodeo performance, watch the pick up men, they work for a nominal fee, provide good horses, and save lives with out any accolades. yes it is a adrenaline rush like no other.  extreme sport? you bet.
