to much salt pork

with this drought going on and now a strong chance of rain this month, everyone crying and praying for rain it reminds me of a story the writer j. frank dobie told
during the hight of the great depression, with the giant dust storms and drought sweeping the mid west and texas. the remedy seemed to be prayer meetings held in the old time brush arbors out in the post oak country.  at this one sunday afternoon prayer meeting a preacher who was especialy attenative got a little carried away with his prayer. a old time rancher had kneeled next to the preacher and at the end of each paragraph issues a amen. after about ten minutes of loud boistrus prayer the preacher got down to brass tacks. lord he said. our pastures are barren and dry from the lack of rain, we ask you to send down the rain in barrels, a real fence lifter! we ask you to make it rain bobtailed heifers, we ask you to make it raincats, we ask you to make it rain barrels of pickles, we ask you to make it rain barrels of salt pork! with that the old rancher next to the preacher leaned over , nudged the preacher with his elbow and said," that's just to much salt pork!!"
