commentary

yesterday I posted a blog on maverick cattle and state law concerning them.  that being what it may I will elaborate on it a little more. this mainly concerns management practices of cow men .  for some unexplained reasons there haS ALWAYS BEEN PEOPLE WHO MIGRATED TO THE COW BUSINESS WHO HAVE ABSOLUTLY NO BUSNESS BEING THERE. I DONT KNOW IF IT IS THE HISTORIC FACTER, THE ROMANCE, OR THE MISTAKEN THOUGHT OF GREAT WEALTH.   these people seemed to always have a attitude that altho they have no experience in the industry they are wiser than those who have been there for years. the wisest entrpeneurs are those who realize their weeknes and hire good experienced help, not the other way around. I don't know how many people ive seen over the years who actually said they would show this bunch dumb shit kickers how to do it. they aren't around anymore. the shit kickers are.  those people will invariably let their cattle go wild due to environment and lack of human contact. and the contact they did have was wrong.   rough country, brushy country, and the wrong kind of work will make as many mavericks aS ANYTHING. WHEN AT THE END OF THE DAY THE "RANCHER" IN QUESTION DOSENT HAVE AS MANY CALVES AS HE THINKS HE SHOULD HE HOLLERS THEIF AND POINTS A CROOKED FINGER AT THE NEIGHBOR WHO SADDDLES A HORSE BEFORE DAYLITE AND IS "AMONG UM" AT SUN UP.   time and again it has proved out the "missing cattle" were right on the ranch all along.  just smarter than the rancher. my advice to green horns has always been the same; if you cant afford the right kind of help, don't buy in.  but again ego will almost always win out. these green horns will almost invariably be found in the local coffee shop expounding their intellect in the cow bussines.  one rancher was actually complaining about his calf crop percentage until he found out you couldn't count the 50 head of bulls he ran as part of the producing cow herd.  another was whinning about his low percentage of calves until he let it slip his youngest bull was 10 years old! basic knowledge for a legitimate cowman. these people setting in coffee shops spouting their ignorance can cause more damage to the labor force that is legitimate, who is doing his job for the lifestyle and not the wealth.  these same ranchers usually have a outside income that is substancial, but will continue to starve his cowboys on a meager salary because that's the way its done.  that cowboy will put in more hours daily for less mony than the worker at the ranchers other business.  when questioned about it the rancher will say there is no money in the cow business  to pay better.  maybe. but maybe if the cowboy made a better living he would be in a better frame of mind to make the ranch more profitable.  the sad fact is the money to be made in ranching is in the real estate end of things. thanks to the dirt pimps who have no soul they have broken up the good ranches, sold the deeded soil and took the money and run. that's a subject for another day. thanks for letting me rant.
