a doubled rope

years ago when we lived in wickenburg arizona we belonged to a roping club there that was a lot of fun.  every weekend you could go there and rope in three ropings, your kids could run barrels or what ever all for 75 bucks or less. if you placed in a roping or two you could get home with a hundred or so dollars.  had a lot of fun there.  they had a "pop" box that had soda pop and beer iced down .  most of the time paying was the honor system. i never knew any one who cheated.
this one saturday nite it was late and there was a extra large amount of teams so the ropins were gonna pay good. i had three call backs in the open roping and no one was even close to us, so all we needed was good solid runs  with each partner.
in this club was a saddle maker  who didnt rope that good but could drink peppermint shnaps like water. this night he was drunker than a waltzin piss ant. he was horse back but his horse was wandering around through the crowd. he was more nuisance than anything. this saddle make had a wife who was TOUGH . she had been spending her week ends in jail for fist fighting in one of the local bars. and it wasnt women she was fighten with!!  as i was riding into the arena to run my first steer i heard some one say "hit the s.o.b. again "! i looked back and saw mrs. jefe whippen this drunk saddle maker over the head with a double rope!!  she was doing some pretty good work on mr. saddle makers head. his hat was on the ground and he was so drunk he wasnt even trying to protect his himself.  mrs. jefe was calling him some names that i wouldnt call a dog each time she smacked him with a doubled nylon rope!!  for some one who has never seen the damage a doubled nylon can do its not pretty!! whelts that raise a quarter inch and turn bright red!! and they dont go away over nite!!
i left my horse and ran to the mrs. and was pulling her away from the wreck when i looked up and saw mr. saddle makers wife wading through the crowd comming toward me! the first thing to cross my mind was i was going to have to fight HER!!  when she got to us she told me to turn the mrs. loose so she could finish the job!!! she said he deserved everything he got!! i was told mr. saddle maker called mrs. jefe and one of her friends a foul name, but she never told me what it was. for the next week every one who went in that saddle shop knew what had happened. some folks who heard the story went to just see the red welts accros his face!! but he kept his mouth shut around all women from then on!!!
