When i first went to work at AZL there was some real good hands workin there. They were a little high on them selves, which seems to be a common condition in good cowpunchers under the age of 80 or so. After a year or so i got to know a lot of these fellas and we became good friends, for life.
after that first year we were at a feedlot ropin that was kinda of a family, fun day for feedlot employees. there was a free barbaque, lots of odd games with prizes for all. there was a egg toss, that was interesting, a ribbon roping, foot races and a team penning, and of course a team roping.
the egg toss got real suspenseful. with a couple of couples going to a tie for first. i bet they were throwing them raw eggs 50 yards before it was over, with the last two tosses over hand because they couldnt underhand them that far!!!i forget who the winners were but what they won they earned!!
the ribbon roping was a wild event with one ropers horse runnin off with the steer and the muggers hand trapped in the loop around the steer. four of us had the steer mugged when some one cut the rope and turned us all loose!! thankfully no one was hurt but that mugger was covered in green moisture!!
no one from our neck of the woods had seen a team penning. a panel pen was erected in the middle of the arena . a two man team was to cut 3 animals from a herd and then pen them in that little 12x12 pen. no easy feat.
only 3 or 4 teams entered and the managment was calling for a few more to enter to make it intresting. a couple of my friends decided to enter, saying they had the best cowhorses around!! me and the mrs. were sittin on the tailgate of the pickup next to these top hands when they said that. another AZL cowboy was there with us. when they went to enter he stated that that was kinda a high handed thing to say and i agreed. the upshot of it was this other cowboy and me entered.
when our two friends with the best horses were called to compete we watched with anticipation of seeing those two top notch mounts work. well after the 2 minute time limit they had one steer in the corral. with that they were winning the event because no one had penned a steer yet!!
my partner was a transplant from south carolina, talked kinda slow, moved kinda slow but was deliberate as hell and was a hand. we were called to make our run , me riding a appaloosa and my partner from the deep south. you could hear the people snickering. it took us a full 2 minutes to pen our cattle but us that was riding those less than top cowhorses were leading the event!!
the moral of the story is dont brag up your ponys unless you can back it up!!
before it was over we got bumped to third with those fellars on those top horses didnt place!!
