We all know by now that Baxter BLACK has a cow outfit and lives in Benson Arizona. when I worked at the Willcox Livestock Auction, Baxter would periodicly come in with a animal to be sold. This one day he arrived with his suv pulling a bumper pull trailer. Now this was the day before the sale, when most sellers bring their cattle to get checked in. That way when they make the ring on the next day they are full, well fed and watered.
I was working the ally between the check in chute and the tagging chute. It was a slow day and we were caught up with tagging. I had been sitting my horse in the shade and visiting and foolin around with the tagging crew. I looked up and saw a suv pulling a gray bumper pull stock trailer ease into the lane where trailers were unloaded. I eased down the ally toward the unloading chute when I saw it was the great cowboy humorist himself. As i rode up to the chute he ambled around the corner smilling and greeting everyone. When he turned to his trailer the smile disapeared. There was a slidding gate built into the end gate of his trailer, and it was open. the trailer was empty. MR. Black stared in disbelief at the empty trailer. The bare floorboards didnt even show any evidence of use. No wet spots, no manure , just like it came from the factory!! "There was a holstien calf in there when I left home" he said.
He turned and trudged to the suv and got in. He sat there a moment and drove off back toward Benson. We all chuckled and wondered what happened to the calf. With no evidence of use it couldnt have rode very far in that trailer!!
A couple hours later Baxter returned with the calf, and the tailgates tied shut with piggin strings. It seemes that when he loaded the calf and shut the swinging gate he didnt check the slide gate. He then pulled up to the house to get the inspection papers. While inside the house that calf had either rubbed the slide gate open or it slide open on the turn of the circle drive way. When Baxter had returned home the pet was happily munching the flowers around the circle drive!! When he went to unload the second time he had to unravel a mile of nylon rope he had laced across the back of the trailer!! Little holstien was still in the trailer and Mr. Black was a happy rancher!!
